York Handmade Bricks Feature In The Sunday Times House Of The Week

A stunning Berkshire country house, built with bespoke York Handmade Company’s bricks, has been chosen as the Sunday Times’ House of the Week.

The Georgian-style Glebe House in Chieveley, near Newbury, is on the market with offers over £1.75m.

Glebe House was built 20 years ago, using 40,000 York Handmade bricks, which ensured that it fitted in perfectly with the other Georgian and early Victorian houses in the village.

Rebecca Cooke, director of Stowhill Estates in West Berkshire, who are marketing the property, explained that: “York Handmade’s magnificent bricks are an integral part of Glebe House’s beauty. There are delightful touches to this hi-spec build everywhere, with these bricks with lime mortar creating a genuine Georgian ambience.

“The wall at the front of the house was built in the Georgian era and it is almost impossible to see any difference between the look of the wall and the house itself, underlining the quality and authenticity of the bricks.

“This is a home for those who want it all: architectural grace, intelligent modern design, village charm and community, space to entertain or quietly retreat. The current owners designed this property themselves and there has been no expense spared. It’s a wonderful mix of the old and the new.

“There’s no doubt that Glebe House’s classic red-brick façade, which hints at a refined lifestyle within, was one of the striking features which contributed to it being named as the Sunday Times’s House of the Week. That’s quite the accolade for York Handmade.”

David Armitage, chairman of the award-winning York Handmade, based at Alne, near Easingwold, commented: “We are so proud that our bricks have featured so prominently in such a prestigious property feature within the Sunday Times.

“Our mature Old Clamp blend, a mixture of three different colours, is perfect for recreating and enhancing the iconic Georgian architectural style. We have helped to build classic neo-Georgian and Regency houses across the UK and it’s hugely satisfying that a house that’s only 20 years old looks over 200 years old.

“This commission gave us us the chance to showcase our enduringly popular Old Clamp blend bricks, which – although they are brand new – effortlessly give the impression of age. They are suitable for extensions to heritage houses and for brand-new homes constructed in the Georgian style like Glebe House.”

These are exciting times for York Handmade, one of the leading independent brickmakers in the country, who been shortlisted in four categories in the prestigious 2025 Brick Awards.

York Handmade has been short-listed for projects at York Racecourse (Sustainability); Clare College, Cambridge (two categories, Craftsmanship and Specialist Brickwork Contractor) and a brand-new Swiss hotel in Martigny (Worldwide)

The Brick Awards will be presented at a ceremony at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in the heart of London’s West End on Wednesday November 5. Run by the Brick Development Association, they are the brick industry’s Oscars, celebrating the world’s greatest clay brick architecture and craftsmanship.

The ceremony will be hosted by impressionist and broadcaster Jon Culshaw.

The Brick Awards celebrate the very best clay brick architecture and designs in the global built environment. The awards have attracted entries from housebuilders, developers, architects and contractors across 17 hotly contested categories.

David Armitage said: “We are tremendously proud to have been shortlisted for these three fantastic projects in four different categories this year.

“Huge thanks are due to the management team and employees at York Handmade for their imagination, enterprise and hard work, which all combined to make these projects so successful and so memorable.

“It is vitally important to stress that these three short-listed projects are completely different jobs in design and execution, graphically illustrating our ability to work in a wide variety of colours and styles. We believe we can tackle any brickwork project successfully.”
