Workington Town Ladies’ earned promotion to the Women’s National Championship with the achievement being hailed as ‘magnificent’ by club sponsor Fibrus Broadband.

The team earned promotion after defeating Wakefield Trinity 24-12 in the Women’s Northern League One Play-off final at the DIY Kitchens Stadium, home of Men’s Super League club Wakefield Trinity.

On the team’s promotion, the Head of Brand and Marketing at Fibrus Broadband Joe Storey said: “Winning promotion to the second tier of women’s rugby in only their third season of playing competitively is a magnificent achievement for Workington Town Ladies.

“They showed real grit to beat Wakefield at their home ground, and the huge number of Workington fans who made the trip shows what the team and club means to people. Here at Fibrus we’re very proud of the Ladies team, and also proud to be involved with the club.”

Three coaches and numerous cars full of Workington fans travelled to West Yorkshire as 200 away fans attended ‘Sunday’s climax to the season’.

Town Ladies’ promotion is their second in only three seasons with the team previously earning promotion from the Northern League Two in 2024.

On the team’s successful 2026 season, Workington Ladies’ head coach Gareth Nicholson said: “Winning promotion is a massive achievement for the girls, and it’s really important for the growth of the game in West Cumbria, and to inspire the next generation of future Townies.”

“It might sound a bit dramatic, but it’s true that without the support of Fibrus four years ago, the team wouldn’t even be here. Rugby isn’t a money-rich sport, and we certainly aren’t a money-rich club, so to have the backing of a company like Fibrus, it’s hard to put into words how important it’s been for the club and the growth of the game in our area. I can’t thank them enough.”

Workington finished second in the league, behind only Wakefield Trinity, with the team losing just two fixtures throughout their 2026 season.

Ahead of the playoff final, Town had already showcased why they were ready for promotion after a ‘emphatic’ 68-0 victory over Leigh Miners Rangers at the Fibrus Community Stadium just the week prior.

On what the success means to the club and the wider community, club chairman Graeme Peers said: “It's been a season of such promise and it all came down to one extremely tough game. To travel to Wakefield Trinity, a club with huge resources and unbeaten in the League, and win is a testament to the magnitude of this achievement. The team has an average age of 21 and has been extremely well coached and managed by Gareth, Joe and Janette.”

“They have overcome the challenges of the wider project at Workington Town and got the job done. We're proud of them. Next year we'll be up against some huge clubs and what an exciting prospect that is. It was great to see the smiles on the Town fans’ faces after a tough season for the men's team, they deserved their day out in the sun.”

Fibrus, Workington’s headline sponsor, provides stadium and kit sponsorship alongside community and club support, but their biggest show of support to the club came four years ago when they helped the club to launch the women’s team.
The club is now ‘a multi-sport club’ thanks to the backing of Fibrus which has allowed the club to expand their teams to also include netball teams as well as a women’s football team with junior pathways from the age of five.

On what Fibrus and the other sponsors’ support has done for the club, Peers said: “Well done, everyone, and thank you to our main sponsors, Fibrus, who believed in the vision, and all the other sponsors who supported the journey. Where the team has come in 4 years is remarkable and we must thank those who had the vision to set it up and get it going, it once again shows the talent that is in Cumbria.”
