Why Potholes Are More Dangerous In March

As March unfolds, drivers may encounter an uptick in potholes, a common issue during this transitional period between winter and spring. The primary culprit for the proliferation of potholes is the freeze-thaw cycle, prevalent as temperatures swing during these months. Water infiltrates road cracks, freezes and expands, then thaws, weakening the pavement and forming potholes.

Potholes are not merely inconvenient; they're a hazard to vehicles, capable of inflicting damage to tyres, wheels, suspension systems, and even the car's body. The impact from hitting a pothole, especially at speed, can lead to a sudden and potentially uncontrollable vehicle reaction, escalating the risk of accidents.

Dominica Watt, from First Vehicle Leasing helps us navigate the pothole challenge with added detail on the provided tips:

Stay Vigilant: Constantly scan the road ahead, particularly after rain or snow, when potholes are more likely to develop or become more visible. Early detection allows you to adjust your course safely, reducing the likelihood of pothole damage.

Maintain a Safe Distance: Following the vehicle ahead at a safe distance gives you a clearer view of the road's surface, enabling you to spot and react to potholes. This buffer zone is crucial for giving yourself enough time to respond without sudden, risky manoeuvres.

Slow Down: If you can't steer clear of a pothole, reduce your speed before you reach it. A slower impact lessens the strain on your vehicle, potentially avoiding costly damages. However, ensure your deceleration is gradual to avoid startling drivers behind you.

Check Your Tyres: Properly inflated tyres provide a cushion that can absorb some impacts from potholes. Check your tyre pressure regularly, adjusting it according to the manufacturer's recommendations to ensure optimal protection and performance.

Report Potholes: If you encounter a pothole, report it to your local council or relevant authority. They rely on such reports to identify and repair road damage, helping to improve safety for all road users. Your report could prevent further damage or accidents.

Dominic Watt, from First Vehicle Leasing says:
"While potholes in March are a common issue, being proactive and cautious can significantly reduce the risks they pose. By adapting your driving habits and keeping your vehicle well-maintained, you can navigate this challenge more safely and comfortably."
