White Burgundy has long been the benchmark for Chardonnay. At its best, it combines ripe fruit with bright acidity and the unmistakable mineral character that comes from Burgundy's limestone soils.

The Mâconnais, in the south of the region, is often where the best value can be found, producing wines with generous fruit while retaining the freshness that defines the style.

François Carillon's Mâcon-Igé Blanc 2022 is a fine example. It has all the hallmarks of White Burgundy, but without the price tag attached to many of the region's better-known appellations.

On the nose, it is fragrant rather than showy, with white flowers and peach blossom leading the way, followed by hints of fresh citrus and ripe orchard fruit. Everything feels clean and well judged, allowing the fruit to come forward.

The first sip is bright and mouthwatering. There is plenty of fruit through the middle of the palate, bringing flavours of peach, apple and ripe pear, but the wine never feels broad or heavy. A lively line of acidity runs through it, giving the wine focus and making it particularly refreshing.

As it draws to a close, the fruit gives way to a long, chalky mineral finish that lingers pleasantly. That combination of vibrant acidity, restrained fruit and subtle minerality is exactly what many people look for in White Burgundy, and this bottle delivers it with confidence.

Its balance makes it an easy wine to match with food. Grilled sea bass, Dover sole, roast chicken or a creamy mushroom risotto would all sit comfortably alongside it, while a simple plate of soft French cheeses would be equally at home.

There is no attempt here to overwhelm with oak or richness. Instead, this is a poised, understated Chardonnay that lets its origin shine through. It is approachable now but has enough structure to develop over the next few years if you have the patience.
