The devastating earthquakes which rocked Turkey and Syria have now claimed over 22,300 victims – making them among the deadliest in recent history.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced a three-month state of emergency in ten provinces which have been worst affected by the quake which he has called “the disaster of the century.”

Our Time for Life Correspondent, Sharon Cain, and photographer, Steve Hare - who were caught up in the quake and among the fortunate ones who came away uninjured - report on the aid operation from a coastal port 40 miles across the Levantine sea from the earthquake zone.

Dozens of local people gather everyday in Karatas to assist with loading provisions on board.

Meanwhile rescuers in Turkey and Syria are continuing their painstaking work, as hopes fade for those still trapped under the rubble.

Over 110,000 rescue personnel are engaged in the mammoth effort along with more than 5,500 vehicles such as tractors, bulldozers, and excavators. Help has been offered by almost 100 countries around the world.

The rescue efforts are relentless - and everyone is focused on sustaining the momentum as this community rallies round to support each other.

There are many ways you can help the rescue effort – below are some of the agencies in dire need of support:
Red Cross https://donate.redcross.org.uk/appeal/Turkey-Syria-earthquake
Save The Children Children's Emergency Fund - Save the Children

Union of Medical Care and Relief Organisations Donate (uossm.org)
AFAD Turkey’s official disaster emergency management authority T.C. İçişleri Bakanlığı Afet ve Acil Durum Yönetimi Başkanlığı (afad.gov.tr)

As the human loss and suffering continues, miracles include a family of six surviving for 101 hours under the rubble. If you can, please donate whatever you can to help those who have lost so much.
