Glen Lodge
A Yorkshire construction firm with a proven track record in the health and care sector has marked a major milestone on the refurbishment of a sheltered housing and extra care facility for City of York Council.
Glen Lodge in Heworth was built in the 1970s and consists of 32 assisted living apartments for older people. Hobson & Porter has just completed a new roof on the property as part of work to fully modernise the homes, making them more accessible, comfortable and energy efficient.
With a team of between 25 and 30 on-site daily, Hobson & Porter is taking a systematic approach to the £3.2m project, working through each apartment methodically to ensure the project is completed on time and within budget. Senior site manager, Dave McCorrie, from Hobson & Porter said: “Glen Lodge is typical of property built in the 1970s and was ready to be fully modernised. We’ve just competed the pitched concrete tiled roof and also installed new energy efficient boilers in the plant room, which are both major milestones.”
The refurbishment project includes completely rewiring and replacing all the plumbing systems, installing a new low-energy heating system as well as major insulation improvements and fitting new double-glazed widows. In addition, new kitchens and bathrooms with accessible fittings are being installed throughout and three ground floor apartments will benefit from better access to the scheme’s gardens by adding external doors and patios.
Glen Lodge is located just off East Parade in Heworth close to Glen Gardens’ bowling green and tennis courts. With local allotments, a post office, Co-op shop, hairdressers, fruit and flower shop, as well as plenty of other amenities all nearby, Glen Lodge is a popular place to live.
As well as refurbishing properties in the health and care sector, Hobson & Porter also builds new ones and last summer completed a brand new 63 en-suite bedroom £10m care home in Haxby, known as Haxby Hall for Yorkare. It has also recently started work on Lime Trees for Yorkare, which is a brand new £6 million, 60-bedroom care home at Clifton that is due to open in 2026, and will offer residential, dementia, respite and day care.
Hobson & Porter also completed the flagship extra care scheme, Marjorie Waite Court, just off Burton Stone Lane in Clifton, for City of York Council in 2021, delivering 33 new apartments and bungalows alongside a new community hall.
