Unexpected Ingredient That Makes Them Taste Even Better

As Wimbledon takes centre stage and millions of Brits tuck into the nation's favourite courtside snack, Gousto's Lead Recipe Developer Sophie Nahmad says many people are missing a simple trick that can dramatically elevate the flavour of fresh strawberries.

According to Sophie Nahmad, adding a splash of balsamic vinegar and a crack of black pepper can dramatically enhance the flavour of strawberries, making them taste sweeter, juicier and more intense.

While strawberries and cream remain a quintessential Wimbledon tradition, Sophie says this chef-approved combination is one of the easiest ways to elevate the classic summer treat.

"Most Brits would never think to add balsamic vinegar to strawberries, but it's one of the best-kept secrets for making them taste incredible," says Sophie.

"The acidity in balsamic vinegar helps bring out the fruit's natural sweetness, while black pepper adds a subtle warmth that balances the flavours beautifully. It sounds unusual, but once you've tried it, it's hard to go back."

The advice comes as tennis fans across the country stock up on strawberries for Wimbledon watch parties, picnics and summer gatherings.

Food experts have long paired strawberries with balsamic vinegar in restaurants, with the vinegar helping to intensify the fruit's flavour without overpowering it.

Sophie adds: "People often assume strawberries only belong with cream or sugar, but balsamic vinegar can actually make them taste sweeter. It's a simple addition that makes a huge difference and takes just seconds to prepare."

Sophie's Top Strawberry Tips
Bring Them to Room Temperature
Cold strawberries can lose some of their natural flavour. Let them sit out for 20–30 minutes before serving.
Don't Be Afraid of Pepper
A small amount of black pepper enhances sweetness and adds depth without making strawberries taste spicy.
Try a Pinch of Salt
Just a tiny pinch can help bring out the fruit's natural flavour.
Buy British When You Can
Locally grown strawberries are at their peak during Wimbledon season and are often sweeter and more fragrant.

As Wimbledon fans prepare to enjoy the iconic summer fruit, Sophie believes one simple ingredient could change the way Brits eat strawberries forever.

"Balsamic vinegar might not be the first thing people reach for, but it's the secret ingredient that can take strawberries from great to exceptional."
